Environment

These environments represent typical building construction. Note that varying construction techniques may significantly affect RF designs. You should always consult an ADTRAN wireless design Engineer when in doubt.

Indoor Office: Standard metal stud construction with non-insulated walls.

Indoor Open Space: Conference centers, large meeting areas, and exhibit halls.

Indoor Education: School buildings with cinder block wall construction on interior classrooms and spaces.

Indoor Hospitality: Hotel buildings and apartment complexes with metal stud construction and insulated drywall. Assumes firewalls between units and APs mounted in hallways.

Outdoor Open Space: Assumes clear line of sight open venues. This does not account for trees and standing structures.

Areas

Enter the area, in square feet, of the space for which you are planning wireless coverage. In order to obtain the most accurate results, enter multiple buildings, or a building with multiple floors, into the tool separately. Calculate special use rooms such as large conference areas separately as well.

5 GHz Channel Width

Using the wider 40 MHz channel effectively doubles the available throughput of the 5 GHz band. It is advised to use 40 MHz wide channels when possible. Under certain conditions, such as an area with a high density of APs, the use of 20 MHz wide channels is required to prevent channel overlap issues.

2.4 GHz Client Distribution

Due to congestion and channel overlap in the 2.4 GHz band, it is recommended to move as many clients as possible to the 5 GHz band. The distribution percentage is used to load clients between the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz radios. In the event that you do not want to use the 2.4 GHz radio at all, change the operating band to 5 GHz Only in the "Capacity Requirements" section.

Device Types

If your particular device does not appear in the list, select a Generic Device that matches the capabilities from the bottom of the menu. If you are unsure of the capabilities of your device select the Generic n 1 Stream Device setting.

Throughput

Throughput should be selected based on the application the device will typically run, or guaranteed throughput required for that set of devices. If a device is typically used for web and email but occasionally participates in a video conference, then you should select the Web/Email setting as that represents the bulk of the air time the device requires. There will always be outliers to consider, but try to focus on what the device will be used for 90% of the time.

Disclaimer

The ADTRAN Wireless Planner is used to estimate the number of APs required for an application. Assumptions have been made as to the environment and power settings of the APs. While the estimation will be close, it is to be used as a general budgetary number only. An actual site visit and/or a predictive design should be performed in order to confirm the solution.
